Fast and Accurate Reservoir Simulation
The modernization of China’s economy over the past several years has brought along rapid growth in several industries, including the transportation and petrochemical industries. This growth has created an increase in demand for energy in the form of oil. China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is meeting this demand by utilizing Intel® technology to enable increased exploration scope, expand exploration areas and improve exploration accuracy.
Challenge
• Industrial pressure. Increasing market demand, competition and rapid changes in the global oil economy are pushing CNOOC to increase its oil output.
• Increase exploration efficiency. The company’s existing RISC-based servers were unable to support the increasing workload; this was restricting the company’s efficiency in oil exploration.
• Reduce exploration risk. Minimize risk of digging dry and underproductive wells with a high accuracy simulation application.
Solution
• Deploy Intel® architecture-based platform. Deploy four high-performance SGI* Altix 350* servers that configured with 16 Intel® Itanium® 2 processors as the platform to run the oil reservoir simulation system.
• Deploy reservoir simulation system. Deploy a new reservoir simulation system based on Schlumberger ECLIPSE* reservoir simulation software at the company’s Tianjin Branch.
